Kauai County Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative ($150,000)

The funding will be used to educate and support Kauai's families to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and improve social competencies and school performance.

The Kauai County Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative is an outcome of the Kauai County Community Drug Response Plan 2008-2013, which emphasizes the importance of providing support to parents and families in order to effectively combat substance abuse.

Recipient: Office of the Mayor, County of Kauai
4444 Rice Street
Lihue, Hawaii, 96766

Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: Almost 27 percent of Kauai's youth report a lack of parental sanctions for antisocial behavior. Substance abuse plays a role in many families, with 46 percent of youth reporting family exposure to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and nearly 18 percent reporting favorable parental attitudes toward the use of those substances.
