Renewable Energy/Disaster Backup System for American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter Headquarters ($238,000)

This project would support the purchase and installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels with battery support for the American Red Cross headquarters in Hawaii.

The American Red Cross in Hawaii provides critical services statewide. Its headquarters facility is used to train disaster volunteers; deliver immediate relief to disaster victims left destitute after a tragedy; offer lifesaving training, family caregiving and nurse aid training for the sick, elderly, and disabled; and provide emergency communication between military service members and their families in times of crisis.

A PV system will decrease the long-term cost of operations and direct more scarce resources toward helping people in need. The organization estimates that this project will cost $475,000 and seeks to attract investors interested in taking advantage of state and federal tax incentives to defray the remaining costs of the project.

Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: Solar panels with battery support will generate clean, reliable, and affordable energy and serve as a critical backup energy source in the event of a disaster, which is particularly vital for Hawaii due to the state’s isolation and inability to borrow energy from neighboring state grids.
