Lasercomm Link for EOD Robot Operations ($4,000,000)

NovaSol, a science and engineering firm specializing in optical communications, will provide a wireless communications link that is immune to jamming and safe to use in the presence of explosive materials to control Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robots in order to accomplish their mission and minimize risk to personnel.

Although military and civilian experts currently use radio and fiber-optic links to transmit control data to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robots in order to accomplish their mission and minimize risk to personnel, the use of these two techniques remains problematic. Radio is limited by jamming and interference, and fiber optics tend to tangle and break, restricting operations. NovaSol will provide a wireless communications link that is immune to jamming and safe to use in the presence of explosive materials to control these robots. This modulating retroreflector technology, which was developed and recently demonstrated by the Naval Research Laboratory, will provide small, lightweight, low-power terminals ideally suited for installation on the EOD robots.

Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: Development of this wireless communications technology to be used with EOD robots will enable military and civilian experts to accomplish their mission, lessening potential risks to personnel and saving lives.
