Appropriations Request

Upcountry Maui Watershed, Maui ($2,375,000)

The requested funding would be used to increase the availability and reliability or irrigation water in the Upper Kula area of the island of Maui.

This project was authorized in 1997 and is sponsored by the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture and the County of Maui Department of Water Supply.

Rapid population growth has created serious water supply problems on the island of Maui. Agricultural operations in the Kula area of Maui are especially affected by the limited water supply. Water is the most limiting factor affecting agricultural operations in Kula.

The Upcountry Maui Watershed Project will supply irrigation water through a dedicated agricultural distribution system, which bypasses domestic water treatment facilities. The goal of the project is to increase the availability and reliability of irrigation water in the Upper Kula area of the island of Maui. This entails construction of an agricultural water distribution system that includes 9 miles of main pipeline and 4 miles of lateral pipeline. Remaining construction phases, including pipelines and appurtenances, will complete the Watershed project.

Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: Water is the major factor limiting expansion of agriculture on Maui. Agriculture provides jobs, supports Maui's economy, and helps provide some level of food security.
