Appropriations Request

Hawaii Plant Materials Center, Molokai and Kahoolawe ($200,000)

The requested funding would be used to provide technical assistance and native plant seeds for the restoration of the former military target island of Kahoolawe.

The ecosystem of the island of Kahoolawe was destroyed by U.S. military bombing activities that went on for many decades. The specific activities funded are in direct response to the devastation caused by U.S. military training activities. Kahoolawe is a sacred site to Native Hawaiians.

This initiative also enables KIRC, an agency of the State of Hawaii, to improve and develop the island’s watershed, protect archeological sites, provide culturally significant plants, and improve the coastal marine habitat through reduced sedimentation. Funds appropriated for this initiative will enable the Hawaii Plant Materials Center on Molokai to provide technical assistance and native plant seeds to KIRC. The Center also develops technology to effectively deploy seeds to this remote island.
