harkin announces $500,000 in economic recovery funds for university of iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that the University of Iowa received a $500,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for medical research equipment. With the passage of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), the Economic Recovery Package, Senator Harkin was able to secure more than $10.4 billion for medical research across the United States.

“To have first-rate health care for Americans, you must have first-rate research and research equipment,” said Harkin. “The University of Iowa has always been and will continue to be a school pushing for the best and the finest from their students. As the students become doctors, I look forward to the further research and discoveries coming from this great institution.”

Specifically, these funds will be used to replace a failing Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope that will be used to study illnesses ranging from airways disease to macular degeneration to chronic muscle pain.

Harkin has been a long-time supporter of the NIH, the federal agency responsible for medical research. As Chairman and formerly ranking member of the subcommittee that funds health and education, Harkin led the effort to double NIH funding over five years.
