Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and his long-time legislative aide, Richard Bender, participate in the groundbreaking of the new Federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids. The Courthouse has been on a list to be rebuilt for over 15 years. Last summer's floods moved Cedar Rapids up in need, allowing the process to proceed with funding secured by Harkin.

Senator Harkin (D-IA) presents a Main Street Iowa award to representatives from Ottumwa. The funding will be used to restore the 98.7 KMGO building. On Saturday, April 25th, Harkin presented over $600,000 to 14 Iowa communities to repair, restore or improve buildings of importance to a town and its residents. Since 2001, nearly $4 million has been used to support 55 main street projects.

Senator Harkin examines the Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) eL XD utility vehicle outside of the Senate office building. The GEM eL XD, a project of Chrysler, is 100% battery-electric and costs just two cents per mile to operate.

Senator Harkin celebrates Earth Day by test driving the Dodge Circuit Electric Vehicle (EV) outside of the Senate office building. The Circuit can travel 150 to 200 miles on one charge, more than triple the average daily commute of most consumers.
