Levin, Stabenow Congratulate Citizen Corps Council of Farmington Hills for its Achievement Award

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, both D-Mich., congratulate the Citizen Corps Council of Farmington Hills for earning an achievement award in recognition of its innovative practices and successes. The Farmington Hills group is one of the first recipients of the inaugural National Citizen Corps Achievement Awards from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“The program is designed to coordinate volunteer programs to enhance the strength of a community and its ability to respond to emergency situations, and I am delighted that the Citizen Corps Council of Farmington Hills has been recognized for its excellent work,” Levin said. “The safety of our communities is of utmost concern, and organizations like this partnering with local, state and national law enforcement and first responders help ensure safer communities.”

“This award is one way we can pay thanks to the Citizen Corps Council in Farmington Hills,” Stabenow said. “Working directly with FEMA, the council has helped to ensure the community is safe from crime, terrorism, and other disasters and it is time to praise the Council for their efforts.”

The Citizen Corps Council of Farmington Hills will receive the award in Washington, DC, on Aug. 11. Chairman Mike Sweeney of the Citizen Corps Council will accept the award.

The Achievement Award is granted to those Citizen Corps Councils that have used innovative strategies to ensure residents of the community have the information, skills and supplies they need to be prepared for community threats and hazards. Citizens Corps was launched in 2002 with the goal of providing people ways to participate in measures to make communities safer from the threats of crime, terrorism and other disasters. Citizen Corps is coordinated by the FEMA working closely with other federal entities, state, tribal and local governments, first responders, emergency managers, volunteers and the Corporation for National & Community Service.
