Washington, Oct 31, 2007 - On October 31, 2007 William Stanley Merwin, visited Congresswoman Hirono in her Washington DC office to share with her his book of poems called, Present Company.    Later that day, Merwin was honored with the 2006 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry for his book Present Company.  This prize honors the most distinguished book of poetry published by an American author during the preceding two years in 2004 or 2005.

The former Poet Laureate, Robert Pinsky, was quoted, "I don't know of any other literary prize that has such a high standard."

Merwin, one of the most influential American poets of the latter 20th century, now lives and works in Hawaii where he allows his interests in Buddhist philosophy and deep ecology to influence his writing.  Merwin has since been awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for his work The Shadow of Sirius; Merwin received his first Pulitzer Prize in 1971 for The Carrier of Ladders.

In 1998, Merwin wrote Folding Cliffs: A Narrative, an ambitious novel-in-verse about Hawaiian history and legend.

Congratulations to W.S. Merwin on his literary achievement.
