State Loan Repayment

Funds state governments to operate loan repayment programs for primary care medical, dental, and mental health clinicians who work in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas. States match Federal funds dollar for dollar.

Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students

Funds health professions schools and training programs to provide full or partial scholarships to full-time health professions students, with preference given to students with financial need. Grantee schools/programs select scholarship recipients and determine their financial need.

At least 16 percent of Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students grant funds go to schools that direct scholarships to nursing students.

  • The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes $500 million for health workforce programs.
