Photos can be submitted either in hard copy or electronically. Don't send computer printouts. Electronic submissions should be 300 DPI TIFF, EPS or high-quality JPG, with a file size greater than 900K. Include bylines, preferably included in one text file with the story the photos support.
The standard Environmental Update article is 400-800 words. Occasional exceptions are allowed, but all submissions are likely to be edited to fit.
The best outside submissions cover success stories that can be duplicated elsewhere in the Army, new angles on tested, practical solutions or new technologies or practices. Human interest with an environmental angle (Earth Day events, soldiers or students getting involved in preservation, etc.) also works.
Update strives to publish journalistic, low-jargon articles for an audience of relatively well-educated, interested laypeople, soldiers and environmental professionals. We especially target leaders without environmental science or engineering degrees who must make decisions affecting environmental programs.
We do alter submissions, when necessary, to fit our audience language requirements and format. We strive for accuracy and send both submissions and staff-written articles to USAEC subject matter experts.
