Serving Your Community

United We Serve
On June 22, President Obama kicked off the United We Serve campaign – a national effort to promote and encourage community service through the summer, culminating on September 11, a National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Community service shouldn’t end with summer, though.  President Obama is calling on all Americans to make a commitment to their communities and to work together to improve our neighborhoods and help our neighbors.

As President Obama said, “Economic recovery is as much about what you’re doing in your communities as what we’re doing in Washington -- and it’s going to take all of us, working together. I’m calling on all Americans to make volunteering and community service part of your daily life and the life of this nation.”

July 2 – Meals on Wheels at the Kupuna Wellness Center
To kick off her “Sumer of Service” Congresswoman Hirono helped serve lunch to a group of seniors at the Kahaluu Kapuna Center. The center located on Windward, Oahu is part of Lanakila Pacific’s “Meals on Wheels” program. Serving over 1,700 meals for seniors in need each day this program fills a vital need in the state of Hawaii.
The Congresswoman met with a group of 15 active seniors from Waimanalo, Kailua and surrounding areas. The seniors come to the Kapuna Center each weekday morning between 8am-12n for social interaction, activities and to share a meal with neighbors.

During her visit, the Congresswoman donated three baskets of fruit and healthy snacks to the seniors. They also talked about gardening, favorite foods and cooking.
