A red tide outbreak occurred in the region in 1996. Since red tide is salinity dependent, the Caernarvon freshwater diversion was opened to lessen its movement into the Breton Sound Estuary. The red tide closure zone did not extend into the Breton Sound Estuary, so this strategy may have helped lessen the effects of red tide into the basin.
