This photograph shows the turbidity induced by the "muddy Mississippi" as it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Here, over the last 10,000 years much of southern Louisiana was created by deposition of sediment from the river and distributaries as the river changed course. In its natural condition, the river regularly overflowed its banks across the floodplain, creating land as it meandered back and forth.
