[Support Center Home]

Q: For certain modes of transport, such as passenger, there is no carrier. What do I report?

A: For Modes of Transport (MOT)32 (Auto), 33 (Pedestrian), 34 (Road, Other), 60(Passenger, Hand Carried), 70 (Fixed Transport Installation (Pipeline & Powerhouse)) - Enter UNKN in the Carrier Code Field, and UNKNOWN in the Conveyance Name Field.

Q: If I do not know the carriers SCAC or IATA code, can I still send the EEI?

A: Yes, Click on the Help link just to the right hand side of the SCAC/IATA data field, this will tell you what you should do.

Q: I have a shipment that will transship through Canada, how do I handle it?

A: Enter it like any other shipment, however, report the Port of Export as the Canadian border point. In addition, the Exporting Carrier Code and Mode of Transportation should reflect the border crossing carrier and MOT.

Q: I have been asked to enter the Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) Code, but AESDirect shows it as an optional field?

A: The FTZ is an optional field except in cases where Customs have requested that it be entered for specific shipments or USPPIs, in which case it is considered mandatory.

Q: For shipments between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, do I need an EEI?

A: Yes, any shipments between the U.S. and Puerto Rico are treated as exports from the U.S. In addition, air shipments between the U.S. and Puerto Rico, also require the Port of Unlading to be specified (in general, only vessel shipments require the Port of Unlading to be specified).

Q: If I do not know the exact departure date, what should I do?

A: AES allows you to provide your best estimate of the departure date.
