Paramus, NJ, Apr 2 -

Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) presented a bronze star medal to John “Jack” Lemenmeier, a veteran and current resident of the Paramus Veterans Home, on March 13, 2009. Lemenmeier served in the Army as a Rifleman 745 in World War II, and recently celebrated his 100th birthday on February 22, 2009.

Garrett presented Lemenmeier with the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal & Bronze Star Attachment, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button for World War II.

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to commend Mr. Lemenmeier for his service to our country by presenting him with medals that are long overdue,” Garrett said. “Service in our Armed Forces is one of the noblest sacrifices that any individual can make, as they are truly dedicating their lives to the protection of freedom and innocent life.”

Garrett has been a consistent support of projects and legislation to help veterans and active duty soldiers. He has been working to secure funding for the expansion of the Veterans Memorial Home in Paramus and is actively involved in the Veterans History Project, an effort through which he collects oral history interviews, memoirs, letters, diaries, photographs, and other original materials and remembrances from veterans who served in World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. The collection of these local histories contributes to the nation-wide project which archives these histories for public viewing at the Library of Congress and also online.

Another one of Garrett’s priorities is tax relief for members of the military. He has introduced the Armed Forces Tax Relief Act and the Strengthening America’s Military Families Act. Both bills are designed to put more money into the pockets of troops fighting in combat zones.

“I am so very proud of the Members of our Armed Services, and I am very proud to have the privilege of representing them in Congress,” Garrett said as he was concluding his comments. “I salute our veterans, their families that stand with them, and those who currently serve our great nation.  Thank you and God bless you all.”
