As a member and former chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I have helped lead the fight in Congress against hunger and I believe that every family should have the ability to put a healthy meal on the dinner table.  We have long known the important role nutritional foods play in healthy lifestyles, especially for children.

This section of my website is designed to provide you with additional information about federal programs that help fight hunger in America and provide millions of healthy meals to children and families. Please click on the links below for more information.

Learn More about Senator Leahy's Work on Nutrition and Hunger Issues:

On June 25th, the Senate passed a reauthorization of the Child Nutrition and WIC programs which was signed into law by the President on June 30th.  This reauthorization will renew and improve the School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, the Summer Food Service Program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).  During debate of this bill I worked to ensure that dairy products remain a vital part of the federal school meals program by retaining requirements in federal school nutrition programs to require schools to offer milk as part of a healthy school meal plan.  I also am pleased that the Senate agreed to my proposal for a farm-to-cafeteria program that will bring fresh foods from local farms into the cafeteria.  These provisions and more mean that millions of children and their families will be better served by the federal child nutrition programs.
