Maui Bus Purchase - Island of Maui ($4,800,000)

This project will allow the County of Maui to purchase an additional 12 buses for its rapidly growing Maui Bus system.

The Maui Bus is quickly being recognized as one of the fastest growing public transit systems in the nation.  The Maui Bus began in mid-2006 and carried 865,000 passengers that first fiscal year.  By the end of Fiscal Year 2009, the Maui Bus passenger count will swell to 2.0 million persons, a 130 percent increase over three years.  Over 1.8 million persons boarded the Maui Bus in calendar year 2008 alone.

There is an ever growing demand for service in the community and during peak periods, and many Maui Bus routes are standing room only.  The demand for service is so significant that the breakdown of just one bus can mean delays throughout the system.  Maui Bus needs to continue to grow its fleet to a sufficient size to be able to meet service and frequency demands and  to continue its scheduled maintenance program to eliminate breakdowns that cause service disruptions and a lack of reliable service.

Project benefits include:
• Record-setting passenger counts will continue and pent-up demand will be alleviated.
• More persons traveling will mean more commercial activity.
• Maui Bus will have the ability to reassign buses to entirely new routes in Kula and West Maui.
• Support service jobs, such as bus drivers, dispatchers, and mechanics, will be created.
• There will be increased relief of the County's significant high price of gasoline.

The total estimated cost of this project is $6,000,000.
