House of Representatives Works to Make its Buildings More Accessible

When: 11:30 a.m. May 20
Where: Rayburn 2103
Who: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Rep. James Langevin, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Rep. Fred Upton, Chief Administrative Officer Dan Beard

After a through examination of the physical infrastructure of the Capitol campus, the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer has determined that more needs to be done to ensure disabled Americans have access to the House of Representatives.

Substantial improvement has been made since the Office of Compliance released a 2007 report on Americans with Disabilities Act Inspections including the development of a Capitol Police plan to assist the disabled during an evacuation, the installation of a public address system and the improvement of interpreting services and wheelchair loan programs. While the House has accomplished much in a few short years, there is still room for improvement. The House will work to make the campus more accessible to the public, increase the accessibility of restrooms and build more alternative egress paths. Further improvements will be discussed in detail at the press conference.
