Commander Narayan Nair serves as a Senior Program Officer in the Office of the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps in the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General. He is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of procedures related to federal deployment of MRC volunteers who are willing, able, and approved to serve outside their local jurisdiction during a large-scale emergency.

CDR Nair previously served as a Medical Team Leader with the Office of Counter-Terrorism and Emergency Coordination in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). His primary role was to assist with facilitating drug development for treatment of victims of weapons of mass destruction with a focus on treatments for casualties due to radiation and chemical threat agents.

Prior to working with the FDA, he served as a Staff Internist at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center and as the Head Physician at a community health center in Pennsylvania, where he delivered medical care to uninsured patients and served as the primary medical provider for a large number of HIV positive individuals.

CDR Nair was deployed to Mississippi to provide medical care after Hurricane Katrina. He also provided medical support during President Obama’s Inauguration, President Reagan’s funeral, and President Bush’s 2004 Inauguration Ball. CDR Nair was previously a member of PHS Rapid Deployment Force Team 1, a team formed after Hurricane Katrina comprised of U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Corps Officers who are prepared to respond during a disaster or other public health emergencies.

CDR Nair has been a PHS officer since 1990. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland and holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Saint Louis University.
