TO: All GCN Sites RE: Loss of GRO telemetry DT: 09 Dec 99 The telemetry from the GRO spacecraft was lost at 15:23 UT 06 Dec 99. The initial cause was the loss of gyro (1 of 3). The s/c went into a sun-pointing safe mode. Then after tracking was re-established with the two remaining gyros, a small pointing offset developed (due to a problem in the pointing table). While the flight operations people were working the problem, the normal high bit-rate telemetry was disabled (only the 1kbps was available). Full telemetry was re-established at 20:18 UT 09 Dec 99. The total loss of data was 3.2 days. This outage effected only the BATSE-based & COMPTEL-based burst location notices. The non-GRO-based notices (XTE, SAX, ALEXIS, etc) part of the GCN system reamined on-line -- as did the GCN Circulars.
