Office of the Staff Director

The Staff Director is one of three statutory positions and is responsible for serving as the chief administrative and management officer of the Commission with ultimate supervision of the operation of all divisions with certain exceptions relating to the Office of General Counsel, the Inspector General and the Chief Financial Officer. The Staff Director is directly accountable to the Commission for the performance of all Divisions within his purview and works with the Commission to ensure the agency’s mission is met economically, efficiently, and professionally.

Rob Hickey joined the Federal Election Commission as Staff Director on March 16, 2009. Mr. Hickey came to the FEC from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), where he was Chief of Staff at the National Intelligence University. He previously served as the Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of the Information Sharing and Knowledge Management Division for the ODNI Chief Information Officer.

Mr. Hickey is a former Air Force commander and fighter pilot with more than 2,500 hours in five different aircraft. He is one of few Air Force officers who served on active duty and with both the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve. For more than 17 years, Mr. Hickey was a commercial airline captain with over 6,500 flight hours. He has also served as an information technology consultant for a leading defense contractor.

Mr. Hickey is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and holds an MA degree from Oklahoma State University. He and his wife, Allison, have three children.
