Service Academy Nominations

Senator Lautenberg believes that answering the call to duty is one of the most noble, honorable and proudest things someome can do.  Attending a service academy is one way to answer that call.

Each U.S. Senator has the opportunity to nominate candidates to the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Military Academy at West Point and Merchant Marine Academy. The Coast Guard Academy manages its own appointment process.

How the Selection Process Works

Each Senator can have five individuals (5 slots) attending an Academy at any one time. The Senator nominates ten individuals per slot and each Academy then chooses from the hundreds of applications filed.

The Academies have four eligibility requirements. Each candidate must:

  1. Be a United States citizen;

  2. Be a New Jersey resident;

  3. Never have been married; and

  4. Be less than a certain age:
  • Candidates to the Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy must not have passed their 23rd birthday by July 1 of the admission year.
  • Candidates to the Merchant Marine Academy must be at least 17 and not have passed their 25th birthday on July 1 of the admission year.

Acceptance of any Service Academy appointment commits a candiate to a nine-year obligation (four years at the Academy and five years of active duty).

The Application

You will need Adobe Reader 9 to complete this application. Download Reader 9 for free.

The application process has three steps.  Applicants must complete each of them to be considered.

  1. Letter to Senator Lautenberg: All candidates must send a letter to Senator Lautenberg’s office requesting the Senator nominate him or her to a Service Academy (sample letters are available on some Academy Web sites).

  2. Online Application: All candidates must complete the online application available on this page. The application must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation, an official high school transcript and a copy of the applicant's SAT and or ACT scores (see the application for further instructions).  Only complete applications and materials will be considered.   Once we receive a completed application, candidates will be contacted in October for an interview in November.

  3. Contacting the Service Academy: All candidates must contact the Service Academy of their choice to create a "candidate file."  The Academy will send the candidate a Prospective Candidate Questionnaire which helps the Academy begin their selection process.
