Nevada Test Site Dose Reconstruction

Project Overview

In 1979, the Department of Energy (DOE) launched a major effort, called the Off-site Radiation Exposure Review Project (ORERP). The principal objective of the ORERP was to collect, organize, and analyze all relevant documents and data pertaining to fallout and resultant exposure to off-site population groups in the vicinity of the Nevada Test Site. Since that time, more than 200,000 documents have been amassed and exposure estimates for discrete fallout events have been derived from empirical measurements and computer-projection models. The total collective external exposure from 1951 through 1975 for all communities was estimated to be 86,000 person-R, with the greatest exposures occurring in Saint George, Utah; Ely, Nevada; and Las Vegas, Nevada.

One of the results of the project was a set of data files relating to fallout transport and population demographics. These dose estimation models, included in CEDR, are the Town Data Base file (TOWNDB), the County Data Base file (CNTYDB) and the Lifestyle Survey Data Base files (LFSDEMOG and LFSFARM).
