2009

Jul 1 - Congratulations to Kim Weaver, who was awarded the 2009 Distinguished Alumna Award from the Astronomy Department at the University of Maryland, for her efforts in promoting science. Read more in Volume 5, Issue 5 of the Goddard View.

Apr 17 - Congratulations to the ASD 2009 NASA Honor Award winners: Distinguished Service Medal - Dr. David Leckrone (667); Outstanding Leadership Medal - Steven Ritz (661); Group Achievement Award - BESS Polar Team (661); Public Service Group Achievement - After School Universe Team (660).

Mar 25 - Dr. David Leckrone (667) has been awarded NASA's Distinguished Service Medal. This award is "the highest honor that NASA confers. It may be awarded to any person in the Federal service who, by distinguished service, ability, or courage, has personally made a contribution representing substantial progress to the NASA mission. The contribution must be so extraordinary that other forms of recognition would be inadequate." The medal will be awarded in a ceremony at NASA HQ on April 16.

Feb 13 - SPIE has honored two members of the ASD this year with awards. Dr. Marc Kuchner is the 2009 recipient of the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award. This award is in recognition of Marc's many outstanding achievements which have greatly facilitated the detection and characterization of extra-solar planets. Dr. Neil Gehrels is the 2009 recipient of the SPIE George W. Goddard Award. This award is in recognition of Neil's pioneering contributions in opening the gamma-ray spectral window as its own astronomical discipline though his leadership of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and the Swift mission.

Jan 29 - Neil Gehrels has won the 2009 Henry Draper medal, awarded by the National Academy of Sciences. The citation reads: "For his pioneering contributions to gamma ray astronomy. His leadership of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory and the Swift Mission has led to new insights into the extreme physics of active galactic nuclei and gamma ray bursts."

2008

Apr 29 - Neil Gehrels has been elected to membership in the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences.

Apr 8 - John Baker and Joan Centrella have jointly won this year's Lindsay Award, Goddard's highest award for scientific achievement in space science.

2007

Mar 8 - Congratulations to Harvey Mosely for winning the AAS's 2007 Joseph Weber Award for Astronomical Instrumentation.

Jan 9 - Congratulations to Ann Hornschemeier for winning the AAS Annie J Cannon Award.

Jan 9 - Congratulations to Neil Gehrels and the Swift Team for winning this year's AAS Rossi Prize "for gamma-ray burst discoveries with the Swift mission".

2006

Nov 27 - Jeremy Richardson appointed the first John Bahcall Public Policy Fellow of the AAS

Aug 15 - Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) Team Wins Gruber Prize

June 2 - Scott Barthelmy (661) and Gary Hinshaw (665) receive the John C. Lindsay Award for Space Science

January 11 - Tod Strohmayer (662) shares AAS Rossi Prize for his breakthrough work on millisecond pulsars and QPO from X-ray binaries

2005

August 10 - John Mather wins SPIE's George W. Goddard award.

June 6 - Jennifer Scott is awarded 2005 Robert J. Trumpler Award by the ASP Jennifer Scott (665) is an NRC post-doc

May 26 - Neil Gehrels receives Lindsay Award - Goddard's highest Space Science achievement award.

January 31 - Former LASP scientist Chuck Bennett is awarded Henry Draper medal by the National Academy of Sciences.

2004

May 21, 2004 - Dr. Brian Dennis receives the 2004 John C. Lindsay Memorial Award, for scientific accomplishment in the area of Space Science. Brian is the Mission Scientist for RHESSI.

May 6, 2004 - Two Senior Scientists in LASP honored by awards. Dr. Charles Bennett was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. John Mather received a 2003 Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Senior Professionals.
