Langevin Named Chair of Homeland Subcommittee

Also joins Intelligence Committee

(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today announced that he has been named the Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity and Science and Technology. In the previous Congress, Langevin served as the ranking member on the Subcommittee on Prevention of Nuclear and Biological Attack. The Emerging Threats Subcommittee is a new panel encompassing much of the work of the Nuclear and Biological Attack Subcommittee, in addition to several new areas of jurisdiction including threats posed by cyber-terrorism.

Langevin was also appointed to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and is taking a leave of absence from his position on the House Armed Services Committee.

“I am honored that my Democratic colleagues have entrusted the leadership of a subcommittee to me,” said Langevin. “I am eager to expand my Subcommittee’s work to combat new and emerging threats, and would particularly like to explore efforts to strengthen cyber security.”

As chair, Langevin plans to work to:

  • Strengthen the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office
  • Improve oversight over the Science and Technology Directorate
  • Expand non-proliferation programs in foreign trouble spots
  • Ensure we have the most effective vaccinations for emerging threats
  • Deploy the best radiation monitors as quickly as possible.
  • The subcommittee will have direct oversight of the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office at the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, which is the agency’s primary research and development arm, and is responsible for providing federal, state, and local officials with various forms of technology to protect the nation.

“I was also honored to be asked by Speaker Pelosi to serve on the Intelligence Committee at such a critical time for our country and look forward to working with Chairman Reyes and my colleagues on the committee to strengthen America’s intelligence community,” continued Langevin. “I have had a long-standing interest in intelligence issues and in serving on the Intelligence Committee. I strongly believe that good intelligence is our first line of defense against terrorism and other national security threats and have therefore made intelligence a top priority in my national security work.”

Despite taking a temporary leave of absence from Armed Services, Langevin pledges to remain committed to Rhode Island’s service members and its defense industry. He plans to continue to be active on the House Submarine Caucus and will work closely with his former Armed Services Committee colleagues to ensure that his priorities remain in the national defense budget. -30-
