Langevin Awards Buffer Protection Grant

(Warwick, R.I.) Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today announced Rhode Island will receive $189,000 from the Department of Homeland Security’s Buffer Zone Protection Program.

“I am proud to announce, once again, more funding to help protect our state’s valuable resources and infrastructure,” said Langevin, member of the House Homeland Security Committee. “Grants such as these are even more important in helping our first responders, especially in light of Rhode Island’s dismal federal appropriation announced in May.”

The Buffer Zone Protection Program provides grant funding to build security and risk-management capabilities to secure critical infrastructure including chemical facilities, nuclear and electric power plants, dams, stadiums, arenas and other high-risk areas. In FY06, this program will award approximately $48 million in grant funds to state and local authorities.

In May, the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency was informed it would receive a total of $7,837,616 from the Department of Homeland Security for fiscal year 2006.
