DHS Announces Preparedness Grants

(Warwick, R.I.) - Congressmen Patrick J. Kennedy and Jim Langevin today announced over $3.8 million in emergency preparedness grants for various agencies and private companies in Rhode Island. This funding is from the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and will be spread across ten federal grant programs to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from terrorist attacks, major disasters and other emergencies.
 
“This funding will help support critical efforts already underway in Rhode Island,” said Langevin. “It is always a top priority of mine to make sure Rhode Island has the appropriate resources to be ready for any scenario that may come our way.”
 
“This is the kind of federal investment in local agencies and organizations that enhances our sense of security and quality of life by supporting the professionals who work everyday to keep us safe and prepared,” said Kennedy.
 
FEMA awarded a total of $970 million in grants today across the nation aimed at helping states start, develop, maintain and measure preparedness initiatives across a variety of sectors, including transportation infrastructure and interoperable communications. The funding coming to Rhode Island includes:
- $200,000 for the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency - Buffer Zone Protection Program
- $1 million for the Providence Emergency Operations Center – Emergency Operations Center Grant Program
- $100,000 for the Providence & Worcester Railroad - Freight Rail Security Grant Program
 - $8,497 for Flagship Trailways - Intercity Bus Security Grant Program
- $661,690 - Driver’s License Security Grant Program
- $242,875 - Interoperable Emergency Communications Grant Program

Port Security Grant Program:
$1,402,549 - Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation
$75,000 - City of East Providence Fire Department
$45,000 – City of Warwick
$24,980 – Rhode Island State Police
$24,920 – North Kingstown Fire Department
$22,500 – Sprague Energy

Awards will be made on a rolling basis over the summer.
