LANGEVIN STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S DENIAL OF FEDERAL DISASTER DECLARATION

(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today offered the following statement upon receiving word that President Bush has denied Rhode Island’s request for a major federal disaster declaration in the aftermath of the West Warwick fire that claimed 96 lives and injured hundreds of others.

“I am severely disappointed in the President’s decision to deny any type of federal disaster assistance to our state, or to the victims, and their families, of the horrific fire that stole the lives of 96 Rhode Islanders and injured so many more.  While I greatly appreciate the efforts of federal agencies currently working in Rhode Island, I had strongly hoped the administration would offer additional assistance to our state and local responders and the victims and families as they work through this very difficult time.

Denying Rhode Island the requested disaster declaration not only places additional burdens and worries upon already hurting families, but it also neglects the enormous costs to our firefighters, law enforcement personnel and medical teams who risked their lives to save others.

If the tragedy in West Warwick does not qualify for immediate federal assistance, such as that triggered by a disaster declaration, then changes must be made to provide necessary resources and comfort to families who may endure similar tragedies in the future.

I invite President Bush to take a break from his tasks in Washington and come to Rhode Island to visit the burn victims who struggle for life hour to hour and the countless loved ones who have been devastated by this tragedy.

In our hearts and minds, the fire in West Warwick is a disaster that will leave a scar on the memory of all Rhode Islanders.  May we continue to pray for the recovery and strength of those lying in hospital beds, and may their families serve as an endless well of support and love."
