Course: 2009 Santander Summer School: Earth's Extremophiles and Extraterrestrial Habitability
Location: Palacio de Magdalena, Santander, Cantabria, Spain
Dates: June 22-26, 2009
Deadline: Closing date for NAI scholarship applications – April 24.Overview:
This year the program is devoted to an understanding of the characteristics and diversity of organisms that inhabit Earth’s extreme environments. These organisms exist at the physical and chemical extreme conditions that life’s processes on Earth allow. Extreme environments of interest for astrobiology are, for example, the high-pressure sea floor, the permafrost of the Polar Regions, places with... -
Event: Emergence in Chemical Systems Conference June 22-26 University of Alaska, Anchorage
The spontaneous increase of complexity, from nucleons to atoms to compounds to cells to organism and society, is a basic property of nature. It involves the continuous creation of new entities and processes. The subject of this conference is to try to understand this drive to increase complexity and to creatively participate in the process.
The conference sections are:
Constructing Chemical Complexity
Transition from Non-living to Living Matter
Complex Networks of Physical and Chemical Processes
What Chemical... -
Course: NAI - Nordic Summer school: “Water, Ice and the Origin of Life in the Universe”
Iceland, 29 June to 13 July 2009
The NASA Astrobiology Institute and the Nordic Astrobiology Network will conduct a summer school on the role of water in the evolution of life in the cosmos in Iceland on the above dates. The school is intended for students and post-docs in astrobiology-related subjects (biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geosciences etc.) The school will be organized in three sections:
- An introductory lecture course
- Excursions to several places in Iceland of astrobiological interest (hot...

Conference: Astrobiology Graduate Student Conference (AbGradCon)
Goals for the 2009 meeting are:
- to create an environment of shared learning, by providing time for oral and poster presentations
- to foster in-situ multidisciplinary awareness by providing 2 outstanding field trips of different focus (astrobiological volcanology and astrobiological oceanography)
- to create and maintain a network of interdisciplinary scientists
- to encourage interdisciplinary research projects by providing time during the congress, and rewarding outstanding collaborative ideas, and
- to broadcast the conference to the internet community via web 2.0 technologies.

Conference: Origin of Life Gordon Conference
The origin and early development of life whether specifically on Earth, or possibly elsewhere in the universe, remains one of the great unsolved scientific problems. The 2010 Gordon Conference on the Origin of Life will present highly interdisciplinary cutting-edge research that seeks to improve our understanding of origins while allowing increasingly realistic scenarios for major events in life’s history. This year’s conference will again underscore the rich diversity of perspectives while addressing a variety of key questions. Does life uniquely...
