Outreach Materials and Publications
  • Tornado Safety in Schools Brochure & Poster (350kb PDF file) - The National Weather Service and local officials collaborated to bring comprehensive information to local schools on how to prepare for a tornado and what to do when a warning is issued.
  • "Significant Event" Posters - We have created posters for several significant weather events that have affected the Tennessee Valley, from the 1989 Huntsville tornado to the 1993 "Storm of the Century". You can download the posters here.
  • Public Service Announcements - A collection of audio clips of public service announcements that can be played on local radio stations.
  • NOAA Weather Radio Brochure (350kb PDF file) - The Voice of the National Weather Service is the fastest way to get watches, warnings, and other weather information. Details about NOAA Weather Radio in the Tennessee Valley are available in this brochure, or on our NWR web page.
  • Storm Shelter Brochure (250kb PDF file) - Outlines why you need a storm shelter, the different kinds of storm shelters, how storm shelters are tested, FEMA building guidelines for shelters, and where to obtain more information.
  • Lightning Brochure (450kb PDF file): Lightning is often overlooked as a form of hazardous weather, but it's a major cause of damage and injury. This brochure highlights some of the safety rules and facts that should be followed.

Recent Weather Awareness Events
  • Winter Weather Awareness Week 2007 - The National Weather Service conducted Winter Weather Awareness Week December 3-7, 2007, to highlight the dangers of hazardous winter weather.
  • Fall Severe Weather Awareness Day 2007 - The National Weather Service and Alabama and Tennessee Emergency Management Agencies are conducting a Fall Severe Weather Awareness Day on October 17, 2007 to highlight the dangers of the secondary fall severe weather season.
  • Lightning Safety Awareness Week - Lightning is the "underrated killer" in the United States, and to highlight this threat, the National Weather Service conducted Lighting Safety Awareness Week June 24-30, 2007.
  • Flood Awareness Week - The National Weather Service conducted Flood Awareness Week March 19-23, 2007, to highlight the dangers of the #2 weather killer in the United States.
