----------

Chris Roberts was recognized for her tireless efforts to provide affordable housing in rural communities throughout Florida

Homes for Hillsborough, Inc. celebrated National Homeownership Month on Saturday, June 18 by hosting the 2005 Build UP! Self-Help Housing Community Workday at the new Bayou Pass Village subdivision in Ruskin. The 2005 Build UP! Event allowed community volunteers to spend the day helping the families who are currently building their homes under HUD's Self Help Housing Program (SHOP).

The award was created in memory of Dorothy Duke, a local resident and community activist who tirelessly championed for decent, safe and affordable housing in southern Hillsborough County. Ms. Duke was also the founder and driving force behind Homes for Hillsborough.

Based in the Miami Field Office, Chris Roberts was recognized for her tireless efforts to provide affordable housing in rural communities throughout Florida, and especially her support of Homes for Hillsborough's use of HUD's Self Help Housing Program.

Working together to build their homes, the program participants create a community that is bound together by their common efforts. The rewards go beyond the advantages of simply owning a home. In addition to the skills they gain in the construction process, homeowners have the advantage of knowing their neighbors, developing treasured friendships and enjoying a sense of community in a dynamic, flourishing neighborhood.
