The Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy (CNP) conducts and disseminates research on the role and impact of nonprofit organizations and philanthropy. The Center's mission is to promote understanding of civil society and improve nonprofit sector performance through rigorous research, clear analysis and informed policy.
Nonprofits in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region
Hurricane Katrina devastated many nonprofits in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, but they are coming back and working to reinvigorate the region. Read a policy brief on Louisiana nonprofit health and human services after the hurricane, or visit the Urban Institute's bibliography of Katrina research.
National Center for Charitable Statistics
The National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS) creates and maintains a comprehensive national nonprofit data system on tax-exempt organizations—their finances, employment, governance, capacity, outcomes, and impacts. The NCCS Data Web is a web-based tool that allows researchers to view, download, and analyze data on nonprofit organizations.
Developed by NCCS, 990 Online© is a web-based application that allows nonprofit organizations and nonprofit accountants to electronically prepare and submit IRS Forms 990, 990-EZ and 8868 (Extension Request). Organizations can electronically file their tax returns for fiscal year ending 2005-2006, a free service for small organizations. State Registration Forms are currently available for Pennsylvania, with Colorado, New York and Michigan slated to join our offerings soon.
Everyone from funders to clients wants to know the results of their investment of time and money in nonprofits. Nonprofits, in turn, are eager to get their hands on tools to help them track and report their accomplishments more effectively. CNP, along with the Center for What Works, has developed a common outcomes framework to help standardize approaches to performance measurement in the nonprofit sector. This web site contains a full description of our work, along with detailed lists of outcomes sequence charts and indicators available for download and adaptation by interested users.
National Portrait of Nonprofit Governance
CNP's study of 5,100 nonprofits provides the first national representative portrait of nonprofit governance, and probes the potential impact of current legislative proposals. The first brief explores a subset of findings related to the potential impact of extending some Sarbanes-Oxley provisions to nonprofits.
