Technical Abstract: Human emanations that affect host-seeking by mosquitoes have been studied; this work has resulted in the identification of over 300 compounds that characterize the volatile ¿odor profile¿ of humans. Some of these compounds, tested alone and combined in blends, have been shown to attract Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Anopheles albimanus, but not Culex spp. Therefore, we are adapting methods employed for the analysis of human odors to the analysis of avian odors to identify candidate attractants that play a role in the host-seeking process of Culex mosquitoes. Avian ¿odor profiles¿ and constituent compounds identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis using headspace and extraction methods will be reported.
