Technical Abstract: Culex mosquitoes, as important vectors of arboviruses in North America, are effectively sampled by gravid female traps baited with infusions such as hay infusion. Using several methods, a wide range of volatile compounds have been identified from hay and grass infusions and dairy effluent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the behavioral responses of gravid Culex to these compounds as oviposition site attractants in a dual-port olfactometer assay. Responses obtained to individual compounds and then in binary and/or tertiary blends were compared to hay infusion. The efficacy of lures incorporating these mixtures were also evaluated in the olfactometer and compared to hay infusion standards. These results contribute to the development of standardized lures for gravid Culex.
