specifically RE: what keeps us on the list

I like this list because it allows me to keep up on what is happening
in the US. I also like the fact that it allows me to be in contact
with people in other English-speaking countries, too.

My main interest is not, I admit ESL Literacy, as I am an EFL teacher in
Japan. But since L2 literacy is a concern in TEFL and many EFL students
become ESL students, there is some overlap, obviously.

Finally, this list allows me to publicize my group's activities so that
people in the US and elsewhere can find out about us. Although we are
Japan-based, we want contact with people in other countries and in other
disciplines. EFL in Japan could get too self-contained, too
self-referential, too self-studied. I can appreciate the dynamism required
to deal with the challenges that ESL educators in the US, UK, Canada, and
Australia face.

Sheer volume of postings on this list seems to be a concern for some people.
I monitor and participate on quite a few lists and don't find the traffic
on NIFL-ESL all that heavy or daunting. I use MS Exchange to organize my
e-mail into various folders (it helps to create your own folders according
to your own priorities), and I quickly put NIFL stuff into the NIFL folder
when I skim everything that comes in every morning. Then I go back to read
in detail and respond later when I have time. Some stuff gets the immediate
delete after skimming if I can't use it. Other stuff gets re-categorized
for long term saving. And so on. Since I do about 35-50 e-mails a day
(much of it from discussion lists and newsletter mailings), such a plan is
absolutely necessary.

Programs such as the new Netscape Navigator/Communicator, Eudora, Pegasus,
MS Exchange, and Internet with an Accent (for multilingual users) are
essential for handling high volumes of e-mail for professional purposes.

Perhaps a daily or weekly digest version could be made available through the
listserv program (or is it majordomo?) in the future should the number of
e-mails get to be large enough.
