ESL Research Report Available--Your Input Needed!

Your input is needed in developing a national research and
development agenda for adult ESL education. This effort is part of a
comprehensive adult education agenda being coordinated by the
National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy
(NCSALL), the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) and the U.S.
Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education.

The agenda will describe the critical questions that need to be
answered to improve the effectiveness of adult basic education (ABE),
adult secondary education (ASE), and adult ESL programs nationwide.
Once completed, it should guide existing efforts and encourage
research in the field.

The process of developing the ESL part of the comprehensive research
agenda began with a meeting cosponsored by NCSALL and the Center for
Applied Linguistics (CAL) in December 1996. After this meeting, a
report titled "Towards a Research Agenda for Adult ESL" was produced.
That report is now available by mail and on the website of the
National Clearinghouse for ESL Literacy at CAL. The web address is
www.cal.org/ncle.

Your assistance is requested, not only to provide your own feedback,
but to make sure that all who are involved in adult ESL have the
chance to contribute their feedback. Please circulate information
about the report as widely as possible within your programs and
networks.

You can download the report from the Web or send an e-mail with your
regular mail address to ncle@cal.org,Internet requesting a paper copy.

Note: NCSALL's deadline for feedback is May 1, 1997.
