There are, of course, the conventional methods of having the taped sessions available for sale, though it's a relatively expensive way for a program to do so, and the pooling resources and sending a representative who takes notes like crazy, though that's still financially impossible for many programs, and of course, finding stuff sent into ERIC, though that's a too small subset. Would an ERIC listing of the sessions be helpful? Then there are some of my schemes. They range from the relatively cheap, like getting copies of the now traditional hot pink adult education sheets listing the adult education sessions, and writing to the presenters for handouts and summaries. This could be facilitated by having the pink sheets include presenter contact information. I think TESOL's Adult Ed Interest Section (AEIS) might agree to this, if the chairs were asked, and if there were ways to let folk who didn't attend the convention get one. (In other words, someone would have to be responsible for being the mailer and someone the publicizers.) (Elaine Baush at Fairfax County AE is the current chair and her contact information is available through TESOL.) For those of us on the listserv going to the convention, we could each volunteer to summarize a session and post it within a few months of the convention. The more expensive schemes are about getting more part-timers to TESOL and TESOL to the part-timers. TESOL has been getting more and more expensive, and I, for one, resent that many part-timers in the area couldn't afford to attend the convention. TESOL needs to recognize the problems of part-timers extends to itself and make some accomodation for them. For example, the board could establish a cheap convention 1-day and/or full conference rate for anyone submitting a letter from a program (similar to student rate documentation) that the program can not subsidize the teacher and that the teacher works part-time. It could also have reduced TESOL membership rates for part-timers that would allow them some conference related and other contacts through the interest section newsletter. Finally there are the schemes that are expensive in time as well. Could AEIS sponsor a TESOL grant for some part-timers to put together a publication of some session summaries that TESOL could sell for a nominal fee? The grant could pay for the part-timers' attendance and some of the time putting together the publication. TESOL has not usually paid for this kind of time in its grants, but it needs to be convinced of the need. Perhaps some enterprising part-timers and publishers would like to try this on their own as a quickie publication. Suzanne Leibman CEED ESL College of Lake County 19351 W.
