Castor To Meet With President Obama On Energy, Health Care

Washington, May 4 -

Congresswoman Kathy Castor will meet with President Obama at the White House tomorrow to discuss critical health care and energy reform measures pending in the House Energy & Commerce Committee. Tomorrow’s meeting is expected to focus on ways to reform health care and to reshape how the United States uses, conserves and invests in energy. Castor and her Democratic colleagues on the House Energy & Commerce Committee have been invited to the meeting with President Obama as health care and energy legislation take shape.

“I look forward to talking with President Obama about ways to ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans,” Castor said.

“I am also honored to have a seat at the table as we discuss the details of how America will transition to a clean energy economy and develop new energy solutions,” Castor continued. “Doing so will increase our energy independence. Investing in energy is an investment in our country’s economy and will create well-paying jobs in infrastructure and research and development, among other fields.”

This will be Castor’s second visit to the White House in recent months. In February, President Obama invited Castor to witness the bill signing for the expansion of SCHIP, or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. The legislation extends health insurance to an additional 4 million children.

On health care legislation, the Energy & Commerce Committee is working to have a draft in the coming months.

On energy, Committee Chairman Henry Waxman and Rep. Edward Markey developed the framework for new energy legislation over the course of the past few years. In recent weeks, the committee has held several intensive hearings and intends to finish its work within the next few weeks.

Castor is the leader and advocate for Florida on the House Energy & Commerce Committee. She sought the position so she could focus on issues such as energy and health care, some of the biggest issues facing Floridians and our country. The committee is writing and reviewing some of the most significant legislation in decades.
