FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Bloomingdale, IL – April 17, 2009 – NOW Foods has issued a voluntary recall for NOW Foods Brand In-shell Pistachios, 12oz bags due to potential Salmonella contamination. This is an extension of the pistachio recall being conducted by the company’s supplier Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. and similar to other recalls issued by many other companies this week.

NOW Foods has not received any reports of illness related to their pistachios. In addition, NOW Foods, which has a complete microbiological laboratory on their premises, has tested all lots of pistachios for Salmonella. In all instances, Salmonella has been tested for and confirmed absent. The company has also instituted a new quality assurance policy to test all incoming lots of pistachio for salmonella.

The product being recalled is 12 oz packages of Roasted and Salted In-shell Pistachios, Item 7021. The lot numbers are 1057404, 1080761, and 1099940. No other lot numbers are affected. Pistachios from these lots should not be consumed. Customers should return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

NOW Foods has provided information on the voluntary recall to all retail customers who purchased the three specific lots regarding this voluntary recall via fax, phone or mail.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Consumers with additional questions may call the NOW Foods Customer Service Department at 1-888-NOWFOODS (1-888-669-3663) ext 268.
