Two articles in the April edition of CAL NEWS respectively discuss the growing importance of computer assisted learning and the need for a bilingual approach for ESL students (excerpts below). Although focused on elementary and high school students, these articles are also very important for the discussion on how to best serve the growing demand for English language instruction among adult learners. Computer assisted programs or courses are increasing in number and also in popularity. Plus the availability of good used computers allows low income adults to have the opportunity to become computer literate. Computer assisted courses can, then, serve as the basis of distance learning programs, replacing the use of videos or dvds, and, eventually, changing the nature of instruction as a whole. The seond issue - of bilingual instruction - has been around for a long time. Research and experience now demonstrate that for adults who know little or no English bilingual instruction is invaluable. What is needed is a discussion of methodology and curriculum, the How To's.
