Adoption Review of DOE's Environmental Impact Statement
In addition to the Acceptance and Safety Review of the Yucca Mountain Geologic Repository, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will accomplish its mission to protect public health and safety at Yucca Mountain by conducting an adoption review of the environmental impact statement (EIS) that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) submitted on June 3, 2008. In the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA), Congress mandated that the NRC adopt DOE’s EIS, "to the extent practicable." To accomplish this responsibility, the NRC developed regulations to outline the criteria the staff will use to determine whether the agency can adopt DOE’s EIS.
