Joe,

Sorry if my reply was heated. That "poem" really struck a nerve. If I misunderstood or misquoted you, then an apology is due. I usually try not to get into personal exchanges on the list. I'm all about collaboration, and personal back-and-forth is a waste of everyone's time. But as far as quotes go:

	>quote me. where do i 'paint all immigrants' any way at all?

Maybe you were quoting this poem sarcastically, but this was in your 9003 email.

	>Welcome to America.
	>Do what u like.
	>We'll give u tax dollar.

If you were being sarcastic and actually parodying this poem, it didn't come across that way. Especially after your own "revision".

	>Antje & all,
	>No offense meant, but i see your point, so i'll edit it slightly in keeping with the fact that redistribution of wealth is a many splendored thing:
	>Welcome (back) to America.
	>(Continue to) do what u like.
	>We'll (continue to) give u tax dollar.

I guess you are right. You don't point explicitly to immigrants. However, your logical implication is obvious- you are talking about immigrants. There is no rhetorical cover in the fact that your referent is not explicit. Your "poem", based on you experience with Dominicans, seems to implicate those who come here. Who else is being "welcomed"? Natives? There is no professionalism in making thinly-veiled implications then denying them.

If I am misquoting you, then I apologize. Cheers.

Kevin O'Connor

Keven & all,

please help me to see the error of my ways (so to speak): quote me. where do i 'paint all immigrants' any way at all? i bend over backwards to avoid generalizing and when i do generalize i qualify it ad nauseum--even if it's only to avoid this type of unwarranted criticism.

Show me, and everyone else, where i narrow-mindedly 'dismissed the struggle of every immigrant, casting them as social parasites'. Show me, and everybody else, where i was proud; this typecasting and generalizing speaks poorly of the professionalism that
undergirds-- or should undergird-- dialog on the nifl-esl listserv.

I dont want/ need an apology from u, but one may be in order. Likewise, i'll apologize if u'll toss me the bone of a quote that supports your accusations.

Cordially,

Joe
