I.    Introducing THE NEW AMERICANS
============================================================

Produced by Kartemquin Films, the makers of Hoop Dreams, THE NEW
AMERICANS is a seven-hour PBS series on immigrants and refugees. Airing
on PBS in the fall of 2003, the series captures the intimate stories of
a diverse group of contemporary immigrants and refugees from Nigeria,
India, the Dominican Republic, the Israeli-occupied West Bank and
Mexico.

The filmmakers have spent years documenting the daily triumphs and
setbacks of the subjects' lives, from the homelands they tearfully leave
behind through their first tenuous years in America. The New Americans
puts a human face on the breadth and scope of immigrants' and refugees'
experience in America, telling their stories through their own eyes and
voices, their humor and wisdom, their triumphs and failures.

Visit http://www.itvs.org/outreach/newamericans/stories.html for a
glimpse of the stories of the five families and for updates from the
production team.

II.  Outreach Campaign
============================================================

THE OUTREACH CAMPAIGN
ITVS-Community Connections Project, Active Voice, The National Issues
Forums and Outreach Extensions have joined forces to develop a dynamic
community outreach campaign for THE NEW AMERICANS. The campaign goals
are:
o Improve student and faculty cultural sensitivity on immigrant issues.
o Encourage professional development and sensitivity training for
service providers and business leaders who work with immigrants. o
Recognize and cultivate leaders in immigrant communities. o Develop and
strengthen coalitions and their resources and activities. o Convene
preview screenings and public forums. o Build awareness of the series
using electronic networks, newsletters and websites.

To learn more about the outreach partners and their individual campaign
focus, visit http://www.itvs.org/outreach/newamericans/resources.html

============================================================
III.  Outreach Tools and Resources
============================================================

The outreach team has developed a campaign and partnerships that
transport the content of THE NEW AMERICANS from the living room to the
classroom and into the community. Each outreach organization has been
developing specific tools and outcomes for a target audience which are
outlined on the website and in The New Americans brochure.

Download our New Americans Community Engagement Resources brochure to
learn more and share with others. Visit

IV.  What's Happening: Outreach Updates
============================================================

In each issue of the newsletter we'll share with you how collaborations
are evolving in communities across the states in preparation for the
series release this fall. We'd like to hear from you. Please tell us
about your work and we'll try to include it in a future newsletter and
on our interactive website (coming soon).

CHICAGO
A screening of The New Americans was the kickoff event for Chicago's
annual Immigrant and Refugee Week and United Nations Day last October.
After the screening, three of the film's subjects and the filmmakers
took part in a panel discussion hosted by the Chicago Commission on
Human Relations Advisory Council on Immigrant and Refugee Affairs and
ITVS. In December, Truman College hosted a focus group of partners and
local organizations working with immigrants, to help guide the
development of ITVS' New Americans resources for higher education.

SAN ANTONIO
KLRN public television has conducted a series of financial literacy
workshops using video segments from The New Americans to illustrate
financial choices immigrant families often face. The workshops have been
conducted in Laredo, Texas for families with children ages 7-12. KLRN is
working with many community partners including the Good Samaritan
Center, Hispanas Unidas, the YWCA and an area elementary school. The
workshops have been developed in partnership with Iowa Public Television
through funding from the National Center for Outreach and Anne E.
Casey's Making Connections Media Outreach Initiative, an Outreach
Extensions' project.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
San Francisco and California's Central Valley are a pilot sites for
Active Voice. Some partners, like San Francisco Mayor's Commission on
Immigrant Rights, will use the series to highlight local issues at
pre-broadcast press events. Others will pilot long term strategies --
for example the Northern California Citizenship Project and the Central
Valley Partnership for Citizenship are helping to develop a "Civic
Participation" video module and toolkit drawn from the series. A
customized training packet for educators will be piloted by school
districts and professional development. San Francisco's KQED is also
planning workshops on immigration and diversity.

V. Apply for an Outreach Grant!
============================================================

The Independent Television Service (ITVS) is offering grants to public
television stations to support outreach planning in partnership with
community colleges and other community organizations concerned with
newcomer issues. Ten grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded. You can
download the Request for Proposals at
http://www.itvs.org/outreach/newamericans. The application deadline is
May 2, 2003. For more information contact Jim Sommers, Outreach
Manager, ITVS, 415-356-8383 ext. 242 or Jim_Sommers@itvs.org

The National Center for Outreach recently announced their Community
Connector Grant awards for public television stations. These awards will
enable stations to build yearlong outreach initiatives around PBS
broadcasts with similar themes. Seven of the fifteen public television
stations that received the $10,000 grants have identified The New
Americans as a key series in their initiative. To see if efforts are
underway in a community near you visit
http://www.nationaloutreach.org/Grants/Connector/Awards.html
