Dear Martha,

Aren't you lucky.

This kit is definitely worthwhile:
AMA Health Literacy kit
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/8115.html

This looks like a great video: "Community Voices Exploring
Cross-Cultural Care through Cancer"
http://www.fanlight.com/catalog/films/329_cv.shtml
Community Voices: A Video and Facilitator's Guide
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/cancer/materials/videos.html

You might want to take a look at the following to help in your selection
of materials:

You may find the list of Books and Journals of interest at this Web
site: Readability Analysis of Consumer Health Materials
http://www.nnlm.gov/scr/conhlth/read.htm

Perhaps some videos would help your collection:
Resources for Consumer Health Videos

Cultural competency may be of interest - I think this is free material
but may as well add it!
HRSA has updated The Provider's Guide to Quality and Culture, adding
information to help health care practitioners deliver culturally
sensitive care to Arab, Central and South Asian, and Muslim clients. The
new information, developed in partnership with the U. S. Agency for
International Development, provides essential health-related information
on the growing numbers of immigrants and refugees from Middle Eastern
and Asian countries, including Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Algeria, Iran,
Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. In addition, the Provider's Guide
includes a special section on the health care needs of Muslims. The
Provider's Guide is a joint project of HRSA's Bureau of Primary Health
Care and Management Sciences for Health (MSH).
Topics include:
* getting to know the cultures;
* strengths and protective factors;
* challenges to health and well-being; and
* principles for culturally competent health services.

While not literacy related, videos are always great when dealing with a
low literacy audience:

Their Mother or Father Has Cancer. (1998). Los Angeles: Cancervive

Our fiscal year ends this month and my department is significantly
under-budget. I just received official word to go shopping. :-) It
looks like I have about $500 in my "pocket" and I'd love to hear
recommendations from people about "must-have" materials or resources to
order that support the development of accessible materials for patients
and/or diverse audiences. I'm open to considering just about anything -
from software to textbooks to subscriptions.

Currently on the to-order list is:
Doak & Doak, "Teaching Patients w/ Low Literacy" and
Health Literacy Project, "Literacy, Health & the Law"

Thanks in advance -
