It is important to keep in mind that "health literacy" is a multi-dimensional construct and we don't really have an instrument that gets to all of those dimensions. Those above are closer to a general literacy level (and that is how they are validated) than a "health literacy" level. These are good screening instruments however and are accepted in the literature for that purpose (both are short; 2 minutes for the REALM and 7 for the short-TOFHLA).
