This week, the Institute of Medicine, an arm of the National Academies of
Science, issued the latest in a series of reports on improving healthcare
quality. Health literacy/self-management was listed as one of the 20
priority areas for national action. The report is in pre-publication, and is
available online at
http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10593.html?onpi_topnews_010703

FYI, the National Academies are based in Washington, D.C. and are chartered
by Congress to advise the federal government on science and technology. Its
reports are considered authoritative. The IOM has been particularly focused
of late on healthcare quality improvement issues.
