Health literacy/self-management was listed as one of the 20 priority areas for national action. The report is in pre-publication, and is available online at http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10593.html?onpi_topnews_010703 FYI, the National Academies are based in Washington, D.C. and are chartered by Congress to advise the federal government on science and technology. Its reports are considered authoritative. The IOM has been particularly focused of late on healthcare quality improvement issues.
