FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Kathryn Kahler April 1, 1994 (202) 401-3026

STATEMENT BY U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION RICHARD W. RILEY ON THE PASSING OF REPRESENTATIVE WILLIAM NATCHER

Mr. Natcher was a friend of education. In his forty one years in Congress, Rep. Natcher never missed a vote and never missed an opportunity to help the children of America in his work on the House Appropriations Committee. He will be missed not only in the halls of Congress but in every school in this nation where young people are getting an education because of Bill Natcher.

Equally important, Mr. Natcher represented the old American virtues: fairness, hard work, tenacity and a scrupulous attention to detail and the facts. In an era, when so much of politics is reduced to sound bites on television, Mr. Natcher's commitment to principle and the willingness of the voters of Kentucky to support that commitment should give us pause about how we do our politics in America in 1994.

I join President Clinton and all Americans in expressing my sorrow on the death of the distinguished Congressman.
