Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Kathryn Carpenter, Director, University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences, the Regional Medical Library for the GMR, has turned her Spring 2009 blog message into a podcast. The audio file is 5:03 minutes long and is an MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 file, commonly referred to as mp3. Here is a chance to hear Kate in a new format: MP3 file (.mp3 file). The text of this message is available in pdf: A Message from the RML Director Spring 2009 PDF file.

The podcast was recorded using the free software Audacity and then encoded to an mp3, playable on a variety of media players including an iPod, with such software as QuickTime, iTunes or Media Player. Listen to this podcast and use the Comments section let us know your thoughts on what you hear.

If you would like to learn how to make your own podcast, consider taking the podcasting class taught by GMR Technology Coordinator, Max Anderson. To find out more about this class, see: Can You Hear Me Now? How to Make a Podcast.

The GMR by any other name…

Friday, February 20th, 2009

The  GMR–as in Greater Midwest Region–is an acronym we use everyday in the GMR. Sometimes “GMR” refers to the region itself, and sometimes it refers to the GMR office. On the other hand, “GMR” might refer to the GMR staff. And some network members might refer to the GMR as the RML.

The GMR–as in GMR office–shares physical space with the University of Illinois at Chicago Library of the Health Sciences (UIC LHS). Technically, UIC LHS is the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the Greater Midwest Region. (more…)

Preserving Your History

2009 marks 100 years the ALA has been located in Chicago.   I was reading in the American Library Association’s American Libraries Direct today about this in a blog post called 100 Years of ALA in Chicago.   Even though ALA takes place in Chicago on a regularly rotating basis, it’s particularly nice to have it be here on this auspicious anniversary.  After 2009, it returns in 2013.  You can see all upcoming conferences here.

The Give Kids a Smile free annual dental care event, held at the University of Michigan (U of M) School of Dentistry on February 7, 2009, was extremely well attended. Members of the Health Sciences Libraries contacted schools, PTO, and an online paper to help publicize the event.

A lengthy line of parents and children aged 5 through 12 were already waiting at the door of the building by 8:30 am. The many pre-dental and dental students, volunteering dentists, and all their assistants were very welcoming,  kind and friendly. Several dental students walked around to demonstrate how to brush one’s teeth using a huge toothbrush and employing a stuffed animal’s mouth. (more…)
