The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), possibly in conjunction with other NIH Institutes and Centers (IC's), intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Request for Applications (RFA) to solicit applications for research on the effects of physical activity and exercise on drug use and abuse. Among the areas of research encouraged in this initiative are preclinical and clinical research that examines the neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms that underlie the effects of physical activity on brain function and cognition across the lifespan as well as research designed to improve the translation of existing knowledge of the effects of exercise and physical activity into strategies for the prevention and treatment of drug abuse. This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects. The RFA is expected to be published in the fall of 2008 with an expected receipt date in February of 2009.
